Mike Pence saw Japan’s last line of defence against North Korea tested in Tokyo today

The US deputy leader was shown the missile system which stands between Tokyo and complete destruction if Kim Jong-un ever follows through with his threats of launching a nuclear attack.

He was given a tour of the weapons system after the test by Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera who acknowledged the threat posed by North Korea’s missile advances and China’s aggressive expansion.

Mr Onodera said: “I’m happy to have the opportunity to deepen the US understanding of Japan’s tough security environment.”

The Vice President visited the Patriot PAC-3 missile battery in Tokyo today on his way to South Korea for the showpiece Winter Olympics.

Later today Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will host Pence as the US and Japan aim to show the world how strong their military alliance is as question marks begin to form over South Korea’s role.

The previously strong security cooperation between Seoul and Washington has been looking shaky since violent US rhetoric saw North Korea open up a dialogue with its neighbour leading to progress.

After historic high-level talks, the two Koreas agreed to send a joint women’s ice hockey team to the Winter Olympics in a show of unity.

We must not be fooled by North Korea

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga

Pence will be in South Korea at the same time as North Korea’s ceremonial leader Kim Yong Nam visits as part of the deal struck in the talks.

Mr Kim’s visit will mark the arrival of the most senior Pyongyang official to enter the country since The Korean war ended in 1953.

President Donald Trump cast doubt on US negotiations with North Korea facilitated by the Winter Games but Pence refused to rule it out.

The White House has also cautioned against reading too much into remarks made by Pence en route to Japan.

Pence said before arriving his message to the North was clear: Washington and its allies would keep pressing Pyongyang to give up its missile and nuclear programmes.

He told reporters: “… my message – whatever the setting, whoever is present – will be the same. And that is that North Korea must once and for all abandon its nuclear weapons programme and ballistic missile ambitions.”

Abe’s close aide, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, reiterated Japan’s tough stance.

Mr Suga said: ”We must not be fooled by North Korea’s ‘smile diplomacy’.”

The Japanese show of strength was matched by reports that Donald Trump was planning a military parade to “terrify North Korea”.

The reports of an incredible military spectacle are similar to that of North Korea – Kim Jong-un will show off his own horrifying weaponry tomorrow.

Drills for the upcoming parade have been pictured that showed an estimated 12,000 troops, 110 pieces artillery equipment, tanks and armoured vehicles.

Pentagon spokesman Charlie Summers confirmed earlier reports by declaring that the planning process for the US parade were in their “infancy”.

The Republican firebrand appears to have been captivated by the military showcase put on by French President Emmanuel Macron on Bastille Day during a visit to Paris last year.

A military official said: “The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France.

Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera praised Japanese and US security alliance

“This is being worked at the highest levels of the military.”

A White House official disclosed that the preparation was currently in the “brainstorming” phase and that nothing is set in stone.

They declared: “Right now, there’s really no meat on the bones.

“The President wants to do something that highlights the service and sacrifice of the military and have a unifying moment for the country.”

Following the incredible spectacle that saw tanks, gun trucks and a slew of military men waltz down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees, the Republican firebrand was full of praise.
