Man Utd news: Chris Sutton mocks Red Devils supporters after Jose Mourinho comment

Jose Mourinho surprised many with his comments after United returned to winning ways at the weekend by beating Huddersfield 2-0.

The United coach decided to take aim at the Old Trafford supporters by suggesting the stadium was “quiet”, going on to cite the atmosphere at Portsmouth when they were in the top flight.

It is not the first time Mourinho has spoken about the United supporters. Back in October, he criticised a section of fans who he regarded had subjected Romelu Lukaku to unfair treatment.

The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) have since issued a statement responding to Mourinho’s comments at the weekend defending the club’s fans.

But Sutton has quipped that Red Devils fans are secretly envious of the football Pep Guardiola has arch-rivals City playing at the Etihad.

“I thought the United fans would have been excited by Sanchez, new into his United career,” Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I’m very surprised that Jose has come out and criticised the support, especially because it’s been an OK season.

“If you’re going to be honest, United fans are probably sitting there wishing they were Manchester City.”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright took the same stance as MUST, suggesting the problem isn’t only at Old Trafford.

“One of the most frustrating things for Manchester United fans is that they’ve actually got players that can probably play that brand of football in an attacking sense.

“Going back to the fans, it’s like anywhere now. There’s a lot of tourist fans. In the Emirates, at United as well and City.

“When you get those same fans going away from home, they make an unbelievable amount of noise.”
