Liverpool fans are worse than Man Utd – Joey Barton slams Premier League giants

Former Premier League midfielder Barton’s comments come after Jose Mourinho criticised the Old Trafford atmosphere.

Mourinho claimed the “atmosphere is a bit quiet and it is not very, very enthusiastic,” while declaring his love for Portsmouth’s Fratton Park.

And Barton is in agreement with Mourinho, using the opportunity to criticise Liverpool fans in the process.

“Old Trafford is tourist-central, but most of the grounds are now,” Barton told talkSPORT.

“You’ve got what Roy Keane called the ‘prawn sandwich brigade’ who were at Old Trafford and all the tourists but, to be fair to Man United, whenever I’ve seen them play away I’d say they’ve got probably the best travelling away support or as good away support as anyone in the country.

“Liverpool fans sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at the start of the game, and that’s pretty much it.

“I’m telling you! Unless they score or it’s one of those European nights.”

Barton reckons you have to go down the other end of the table if you want to visit grounds with good home support.

“Who are brilliant at home? I think of teams like Crystal Palace and the other smaller stadiums. I think once you start making massive stadiums the atmosphere suffers,” Barton added.

“You think of Man City, there’s not an incredible atmosphere in there, the Emirates Stadium is like a library at times and West Ham are struggling now going to the new stadium. I’ll be interested to see what happens with Spurs.

“It’s hard to get all the people eating their lunch and their scones at it, isn’t it?

“The atmosphere comes from the ones who have had a few scoops and they all get together and they have the flags waving, but that’s going out of football.

“People are going as a family now, and your missus doesn’t want to sing football songs, does she?”
