EU is KILLING democracy! Dutch MEP blasts EU for using ‘global elite’ to tighten grip

Mr de Graaff, co-chair of Europe of Nations and Freedom Group, said the proposed trans-national lists for the next European Commission President only feature the “globalist elite”.

He argued the Spitzenkandidat – leading candidate – system, which is used to nominate candidates for the election of the position of Commission President.

Under the system, each group in the European Parliament nominate a candidate for the role, with the job going to whichever party wins the most MEPs in the European election.

Speaking in Strasbourg, Mr de Graaff blast: “I would like to point out that the last elections of the European Parliament, the system of top candidates was a total farce.

“Not a single voter in the member states sees this as a serious competition for the position of President of the European Commission.

“They argue trans-national lists will improve the list of top candidates, I say this: It won’t make the EU more democratic, as these top candidates are the pick of the globalist elite.

“We’ve seen how this works in France, there was no difference between the traditional parties – there was the candidate of the establishment and Marine Le Pen, who was opposed by all other parties.

“These top candidates are the puppets of the EU in-crowd, it gives the illusion of some sort of democratic legitimacy to the running elite.

“It will always be people like Macron, Verhofstadt and alike who are pushed forward as top candidate because they are obedient to the globalist elite.”

The Dutch MEP  said the EU’s plans to cut funding to Eurosceptical groups will offend European taxpayers who do not want to fund EU “propaganda”.

He added it was “outrageous” that the EU could even consider cutting off funding for Eurosceptics while bolstering the campaign budgets of pro-EU groups.

Mr de Graaff concluded: “I tell you this, democracy is dead when you smother the voice of the opposition, and that is what is happening right now.”

He also noted the redistribution of British MEPs’ seats after Brexit in March 2019.

The Dutch MEP said the European Parliament should actually cut the number of sitting MEPs “by at least 73”, adding it will somewhat help toward the budget blackhole left by Britain’s financial contribution.

At the moment, the European Parliament has 751 sitting MEPs, however, the Constitutional Affairs Committee voted on a proposal to redistribute 27 of the UK’s 73 seats to other countries, while keeping the remaining 46 seats for pan-European electoral lists of future enlargements.
