eBay: ‘Ultra rare’ £1 coin sells for £5000 – could you have one stashed in your wallet?

The rare £1 coin to sell on eBay is one that would have never been accepted in the UK.

It’s a Gibraltar £1 coin but a commemorative issue.

The coin celebrates the discovery of a neanderthal skull on Gibraltar and features an image of the skull on one side of the coin.

Over the top of the skull it says ‘one pound’ and underneath it reads ‘discovery of neanderthal skull in gibraltar’.

The new £1 design appeared to have been stamped on an old £1 base.

This means the coin, usually two colours, is just the original gold colour, and the 12 sides are not as defined.

One coin has sold on eBay on January 24, 2017, for £205.

Change Checker has also reported the finding of one of the mysterious coins.

Auctioneers named Timeline in London are also selling one of the coins on the 21 February.

What should you do if you find one of the coins?

The Royal Mint Museum offers free verification for those who believe to have found rare coins.

Rare £2 coins have also sold for hefty sums, such as this commemorative Fire of London coin
