Crystal Palace 1-1 Newcastle LIVE updates: Express Sport brings you the latest Premier League news from Selhurst Park

81: Substitution for Newcastle. Mikel Merino – who scored the winner when the sides last met – is on in place of Ayoze Perez. I would have taken Dwight Gayle off myself. He’s done absolutely nothing today.

80: We’re in to the final 10 minutes. Where’s this winner coming from?

Newcastle players are throwing their bodies in the way as Palace attack. Zaha weaves his way across the box but he can’t get a shot or a pass away.

79: Eh? Atsu gambles on a throw into the penalty area and nearly lifts it over Hennessey with a cheeky flick. The hosts just switched off there. I blame the pitch invader…

76: Pitch invader! There’s a brief pause in play as the Crystal Palace stewards are forced to take down the culprit. Steve Parish can see the funny side of it, he’s chuckling in the directors box. Back underway again.

73: This is only going one way folks. Aside from clearances, Newcastle have barely touched the ball since Luka Milivojevic’s equaliser. Saying that, they are weathering the storm.

70: Some nice interplay from Crystal Palace results in Cabaye shooting miles over the bar. He’s done that about four or five times today already. You watch the next one go in…

68: Yellow card for Timothy Fosu-Mensah for a foul on Atsu. Not a smart challenge on the Ghanaian.

Wilfried Zaha has woken up. He’s now giving Yedlin a torrid time down the flank. Isaac Hayden replaces Mo Diame, who must be injured because I see no other reason why Rafa Benitez would make that change.

65: Crystal Palace have been awarded six penalties in the Premier League this season, with five of those coming at Selhurst Park; only Everton (7) have won more.

62: You can see the confidence draining out of Newcastle. Rafa makes a change with Kenedy being replaced by Atsu.

59: Close! Crystal Palace and their supporters are right up for this now. Christian Benteke makes a nuisance of himself before nodding over from six-yards out.

57: Dummett booked for a foul on Townsend. The left-back looks frustrated.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 NEWCASTLE – MILIVOJEVIC

55: Crystal Palace are on level terms! Clark is penalised for tugging Benteke’s shirt as the striker looked to head home PVA’s whipped cross.

It’s a little bit harsh because we see plenty of that unpunished in most games.

Karl Darlow guesses right but Luka Milivojevic scores from the spot.

PENALTY TO CRYSTAL PALACE

53: Crystal Palace are building a bit of momentum now. PVA drives down the left before standing up a cross for Townsend, who nods over.

52:  Ironic cheer from the Palace fans after Lascelles is penalised following an aerial challenge with Benteke. Van Aanholt wastes the resulting free-kick by smacking it over to North London.

50: Chance! Kenedy breaks like lightning but under-hits the pass to Perez, who is flagged for offside anyway. That was a BIG opportunity.

49: A shanked Newcastle clearance galls to Milivojevic, who drags an effort wide of the post.

48: Jamie Carragher has hit the nail on the head. Crystal Palace played the first half like they were safe from relegation. No urgency. Early signs in the second half suggest they’ll give it more of a go now.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 NEWCASTLE

45: OK, we’re back underway at Selhurst Park. No changes for either side. Saying that, Roy Hodgson only has new signing Alexander Sorloth and Lee Chung-yong as attacking options sitting on the bench.

HT: A quick tweet from Alan Shearer: “An incredibly open game, but a good first half for Newcastle. Nervy times ahead in the second 45 minutes!”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Andy: Christian Benteke is just a useless big lump of a forward. No confidence in him whatsoever!

Joao: Benteke has cleared two great opportunities for Crystal Palace today. Newcastle have signed a great defender…

Adam: Was watching Crystal Palace vs Newcastle at a Premier Inn, Heathrow, when some woman asked the barman to put the rugby on instead, and he did!

Nightmare, Adam. I would have checked out immediately.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 NEWCASTLE

HT: So far so good for Rafa Benitez’s men. Newcastle survive a late surge from Crystal Palace to lead at the break. Much more required from the hosts, who lost Kelly to a hamstring problem in stoppage time. Mamadou Sakho replaced him.

44: Thought Raheem Sterling’s miss was bad!? Christian Benteke has just poked wide from less than two-yards away. Zaha’s shot is parried onto the Belgian by Darlow, and he guides it wide. In fairness, it came at him quickly.

Penalty appeals by Crystal Palace after Yohan Cabaye goes down in the box but it’s a terrific tackle by Matt Ritchie. Nothing given.

42: The game feels like it’s drifting towards the break now. Newcastle seem to have Palace at arms length. Townsend sends a hopeful ball into the area but Darlow bravely catches.

39: Cabaye lofts a cross to the back post but there’s a little too much on it for Townsend to connect. Newcastle still look the likelier to score the next goal in my humble opinion.

36: Things just aren’t clicking for the hosts. Townsend and Zaha are struggling to make anything happen with Yedlin and Dummett dealing with them nicely.

33: Awesome double save from Hennessey! The goalkeeper parries away Kenedy’s angled effort before producing a finger-tip stop to deny Perez with the follow-up.

30: What?! How’s Wilfried Zaha missed it? Fosu-Mensah cuts the ball across the penalty area but the playmaker slams it into the only obstacle stopping him from scoring. Yedlin.

28: How’s Crystal Palace’s response? I’ll let you know when it starts… Newcastle are looking pretty organised as Cabaye aimlessly shoots miles over from 20-yards.

26: All five of Mohamed Diame’s Premier League goals for Newcastle have come away from home.

23: The 3000 travelling Newcastle fans are making themselves heard. Well worth the 400-mile round trip so far!

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 NEWCASTLE – DIAME

21: No team has conceded first more times than Crystal Palace this season, and that record looks pretty safe for the time being.

Mo Diame, who’s been Newcastle’s best player in recent weeks, reacts quickest to prod home after Kenedy’s whipped corner sneaks through a crowd.

21: We have another stoppage in play as Fosu-Mensah goes down injured again. Mamadou Sakho and Joel Ward are warming up on the sidelines but I think the right-back will be alright to continue.

18: Kenedy, Zaha and Fosu-Mensah have all received treatment in the opening 25 minutes. Yes, it’s a physical game. No real fluency though.

15: Shelvey slips the ball over to Yedlin on the right and Perez catches his cross on the volley, forcing Hennessey into a save.

14: Clark plays it over the top but Gayle couldn’t quite meet it and Hennessey gathers. Fosu-Mensah then sees a long-range effort blocked before it could do any damage. Unsurprisingly we’re lack a little quality in the final third.

12: There’s goals in this. Newcastle look so vulnerable through the middle and Crystal Palace are weak in wide positions. So much space for Kenedy down that left-hand side.

10: Newcastle have recovered after that early Zaha chance. The visitors are using the flanks nicely and taking advantage of Palace’s lack of width.

Commentators curse! Just as I’m rambling about how the Toon are playing their way into the game, the Eagles almost strike.

Van Aanholt avoids three challenges before playing it through to Benteke, who’s denied by Darlow and the left-back then has an effort blocked on the follow up!

9: Panic around the home stands as Zaha pulls up injured. He’s moving gingerly with what looks like an ankle injury. He’s trying to shake it off.

Decent chance for Gayle, who controls an attempted clearance before swivelling and shooting straight at Hennessey.

6: D’oh! Yeah, I’m 27 and still use Simpson references. A loose ball falls to Benteke, but bizarrely Townsend takes it off his toes and neither end up shooting. I would say FAIL but that’s soooooo 2015.

3: That tattoo of Kenedy’s it mildly terrifying. He’s also got his girlfriend’s face tattooed on his ribs. Fingers crossed they don’t break up.

Wilfried Zaha has a golden opportunity to score having been threaded through by Milivojevic, but Lascelles makes the vital interception. Early warning signs for Newcastle.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-0 NEWCASTLE

1: We’re underway people. Huge game at the bottom of the Premier League, or YUGE as Donald Trump would say.

Crystal Palace have lost just once in their last nine Premier League home games (W4 D4), keeping a clean sheet in each of the last two. They last recorded three consecutive home shutouts in the Premier League back in April 2017 under Sam Allardyce.

TWO-MINUTE WARNING

14:13: We’re almost underway folks. The Crystal Palace Eagle has done its thing, the players have emerged from the tunnel and the supporters are going mental in the stands.

I can see goals today. 2-2 is my prediction.

TOP MARKS

14:08: Newcastle will be backed by just under 3,000 travelling fans in a sold-out visitors’ section today. Just the 400-mile round trip!

DON’T DWELL ON IT

14:05: Striker Joselu has been ordered not to dwell on what might have been after passing up the opportunity to drag Newcastle away from the Premier League relegation zone.

The 27-year-old Spaniard missed a first-half penalty and squandered another glorious opportunity in Wednesday night’s home clash with Burnley, and was made to pay at the death when the visitors snatched a point with a late equaliser.

I guess his mood didn’t improve when the Magpies had clinched a loan deal for Leicester’s Islam Slimani.

Rafael Benitez said: “Joselu works so hard for the team and it is a pity when a striker misses a penalty. For strikers, confidence is crucial.

“He was a little bit down the day after, but he has been training well and we will see how he reacts. But my message for him and for any of our players is that they have to carry on.”

OH BOY…

14:00: Kenedy is the only starter today who wasn’t at Newcastle in the Championship last season. Wrexham spent more money than Newcastle in the January transfer window folks. Wrexham.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Graham: Newcastle game followed by the Super Bowl tonight. Safe to say it’ll depend on the Newcastle game regarding how much alcohol is consumed.

Kris: Massive game today, three points against Newcastle is a must since the other teams around us have started picking up points. Come on Eagles!

Louis: F***** train going to Clapham Junction is stuck in Wandsworth Town for the foreseeable. Going to be late for the game. Hate trains, hate London and hate my life right now.

I know Louis’ tweet isn’t related to the match, but I thought the guy deserved a platform to vent his anger at our terrible transport system. Good luck, mate.

MISSED A SITTER

12:50: Anyone see Raheem Sterling’s miss yesterday? The England international shot wide from point-blank range with an open goal in front of him yesterday.

That’s a regular five-a-side occurrence for me…

But it prompted Twitter folk to share their own memories of glaring misses and one from Jon Dahl Tomasson caught my eye.

Newcastle fans will remember Tomasson missing a hatful of chances during a tough stint at St James’ Park. None matched this one though, with Tomasson – in the centre of the goalmouth – scooping over the bar from barely a foot out.

He won’t thank me (because there’s no chance of us ever meeting) but I’ve posted the video to refresh your memories. Enjoy!

TRAVEL NIGHTMARE

12:45: Not a very surprising headline, admittedly.

But would it interest you to hear that it’s a double whammy of travel chaos for Newcastle fans? Well I’m going to tell you anyway.

There are train cancellations and disruption to overground service in the capital, while Virgin Trains conveniently told customers to expect “residual delays” after a power problem earlier this morning.

Well worth the money, right? Good luck guys.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Phil: I’m never more nervous than when it’s a must-win game! Really looking forward to seeing more of Kenedy! He’s class.

Gee: Guys, why on earth did we let Rolando Aarons and Aleksandar Mitrovic go?! They are massive impact players.

Jack: Anyone else lumping their house on Dwight Gayle scoring today? It’s going to happen.

THE STANDINGS…

13:30: It’s chaos at the bottom of the Premier League. Chaos I say!

Seven points separate the bottom 11, and today’s pair are well and truly in the thick of it.

Malcolm Tucker-level thick of it.

Anyway, Crystal Palace (26 points) and Newcastle (24 points) are in 15th and 16th respectively with the Toon on level terms with Swansea, Stoke and Huddersfield.

Points are badly needed today. A draw doesn’t really help anyone.

TEAM NEWS – NEWCASTLE

13:25: And now for the visitors. Rafa Benitez has made three changes from the draw with Burnley.

Deadline day loan signing Islam Slimani, who was a doubt after sustaining a thigh injury in training, misses out.

Dwight Gayle starts ahead of Joselu, who is out of the squad completely. I think I can hear Newcastle supporters cheering that from here.

January signing Martin Dubravka makes the bench.

Elsewhere Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey return to the starting XI with Mikel Merino and Christian Atsu benched.

TEAM NEWS – CRYSTAL PALACE

13:20: Let’s have a look at how the hosts have set up. Roy Hodgson has made one change from the side who drew with West Ham during the week.

Yohan Cabaye comes in for Bakary Sako following his injury. Alexander Sorloth, Crystal Palace’s new striker, only makes the bench.

AFTERNOON

13:10: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League.

Today’s first offering comes from Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace entertain Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle.

I’ve awoken to a steaming hangover and a 45-minute replacement bus service, so I need this game to deliver.

I’m not greedy. 4-4 will suffice…

Both sides are hovering around the relegation zone and three points would give them some much-needed breathing space.

Let’s get going!

CRYSTAL PALACE vs NEWCASTLE – PREVIEW

Palace will be without Bakary Sako for the rest of the season after the forward suffered a fractured ankle and damaged ligaments.

Deadline-day signing Alexander Sorloth is set to go straight into the squad, defender Jeffrey Schlupp (knee) and midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek (ankle) are both in recovery, while Scott Dann, Jason Puncheon and Connor Wickham will all miss the remainder of the season because of major knee injuries.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez will make a late decision on loan signing Islam Slimani – the striker has a thigh injury which will be assessed. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka goes straight into the squad after completing his switch from Sparta Prague and he will be joined by Rob Elliot following his recovery from a back problem but defenders Jesus Gamez (ankle) and Florian Lejeune (foot) are still out.
