Lewis Hamilton: Toto Wolff makes big Mercedes contract claim ahead of new F1 season

Four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is expected to sign a new deal with Mercedes, extending his stay with the team.

But the 33-year-old, whose current deal runs until the end of this year, has to pledge his future.

Wolff though is claim and believes the formalities will be tied up shortly.

“Lewis has become such an important pillar within the team that it’s a no-brainer that we continue with each other,” the Austrian said in an interview on the team website (www.mercedesamgf1.com).

“The discussions are ongoing in a very positive mindset and it’s just a matter of time when we seal it and put a signature to the document.”

The new Mercedes F1 W09 car will be launched at Silverstone on February 22 and was given a run for the first time last week.

“We’ve had a good winter, I would say,” he added. “No real drama, but there is always stress within the organisation at that time of the year.”

Hamilton’s future is top of the agenda but it’s been a strange few weeks for the world champion.

He deleted all his social media posts and went AWOL from his online world over the Christmas period.

He had been caught up in a controversy over allowing his nephew to wear a princess dress but was then seen recently as Disneyland in his first public appearance since.

Meanwhile McLaren boss Zak Brown reckons Hamilton will have a fight on his hands this year with Fernando Alonso.

“I can’t wait to see it. I’m eager for the new season to see who’s where,” Brown told Express Sport.

“I can’t wait to see Fernando and Stoffel mixing it up with each other, mixing it up with Lewis and Fernando being in a race-car that is capable of being a good race-car.

“We had some decent qualifying last year but our race pace was even further off.

“Fernando had a good qualifying at Spa but when we went into race mode, people just drove around him.

“It was great to see in Mexico, a situation where he could race hard because we were a little more competitive, that tussle with Lewis.

“I hope we see more of that and at the front end of the field.”
