eBay: £2 coin sells for £435 – rare coins commemorate Fire of London – do you have one?

A RARE £2 coin has been sold on eBay multiples times for huge sums.

The rare Trial of the Pyx Great Fire of London Silver Proof coins are selling for upwards of £350.

One sold on 26 December 2017 for £380 in Witham and another for £455.10 from Uckfield.

Both coins had numerous bids, with the latter racking up a whopping 38 bids from 14 different bidders.

What is a Trial of the Pyx coin? 

The Trial of the Pyx is a method to ensure new coins conform to standards.

The coins are judged in terms of their diameter, chemical composition and weight.

One seller wrote of their offering: “A rare opportunity to purchase a genuine ‘Trial of the Pyx’  coin, this is one of only nine available from the Royal Mint; this is also the first year a “pyx” coin has been made available to the public.”

“The coin was minted to commemorate the Great Fire of London and it is cast in silver. 

“The coin is sealed in a tamper-proof packaging and is accompanied by a brochure explaining the origins of the unique “Pyx” trial.

“There will be a certificate of authenticity issued by the Royal Mint to follow – these were not available at the time of listing.”

What is the Fire of London coin?

This version of the coin show London in flames.

It was created for the 350th Anniversary of the Great Fire of London.

An inscription around the outside of the coin reads: “THE WHOLE CITY IN DREADFUL FLAMES”.

Royal Mint said of the coin: “Anyone with an interest in British culture and history will be fascinated by these stunning Great Fire of London coins, which both commemorate the great disaster and celebrate the resilience of the city. 

“For, despite the devastation, London rose from the ashes to become the great city that it is today.”

They are selling their version of this coin for £840.
