State of the Union LIVE: Donald Trump delivers first SOTU speech – will Melania be there?

The State of the Union (SOTU) is an annual speech given by the sitting President that acts as a political and economic report of the previous 12 months.

It will be an opportunity for Trump to give an assessment of his first year in office as well and offer a glimpse into what policies to expect in the year ahead.

It is expected that Trump will mention the boom of the US economy during his first year.

Trump gave his first speech to a joint Congress last year, but it was not considered an official SOTU address as he had just taken office.

Melania attended the first joint Congress address and the US First Lady is expected again to be watching her husband’s first SOTU speech.

His first SOTU speech comes as his approval rating hovers in the 30s.

The theme of Trump’s address will be “building a safe, strong, and proud America,” a senior White House official said in a briefing with reporters last week.

12.15am GMT (7.15pm EST): Melania Trump has confirmed she will be sitting in Congress watching her husband’s SOTU speech.

Melania tweeted: I will be joined tonight by an honourable group of Americans. Sitting with me are the heroes who have served our nation in times of need, families who have suffered at the hands of evil, and citizens who have embraced the American dream.”

12am GMT (7pm EST): The White House has been tweeting exerts from Trump’s upcoming SOTU address.

The tweets said: “America is a nation of builders. We built the Empire State Building in just one year – isn’t it a disgrace that it can now take ten years just to get a permit approved for a simple road?”

“Tonight, I want to talk about what kind of future we are going to have, and what kind of nation we are going to be. All of us, together, as one team, one people, and one American family.

“America has also finally turned the page on decades of unfair trade deals that sacrificed our prosperity and shipped away our companies, our jobs an our nation’s wealth.

“Americans love their country. And they deserve a government that shows them the same love and loyalty in return.

“In our drive to make Washington accountable, we eliminated more regulations in our first year than any administration in history.”

11.50 pm GMT (6.50pm EST): Just under three hours to go before Donald Trump is set to make his first SOTU address to Congress.

More than 20 Democratic legislators have invited so-called “Dreamers” – immigrants who were brought to the US as children and are living there illegally, to the State of the Union address.

Congress has so far been unable to come up with a legislative solution for their legal status, which was at the centre of the recent government shutdown.

Representative Paul Gosar of Arizona tweeted: “Of all the places where the rule of law needs to be enforced, it should be in the hallowed halls of Congress.

“Any illegal aliens attempting to go through security, under any pretext of invitation or otherwise, should be arrested and deported.”
