Has thee ever been a Star Wars character (or any film character, for that matter) who has been surrounded by so much mystery, rumour and theory?
After two years debating whether Supreme Leader Snoke was secretly Darth Plagueis, Mace Windu, Jar Jar Binks or an ancient Whill, he was swiftly dispatched with no explanation.
Normaly there is no coming back after being chopped in half as your dead eyes stare up at the screen. But this is Star Wars and Luke just proved you should never believe everything you see.
Now the man who brough Snoke to life (and apparent death) has fanned the flames and given fans a new, ahem, hope.
Andy Serkis is currently starring (in the flesh) in Black Panther but holds out hope he could also be back on screen as Snoke. In a chat with Slash Film he reminded fans that the Star Wars universe is not so limited as our own.
Some fans even believe that Snoke’s infamous ability to manipulate minds meant he deceived Kylo Ren and Rey in that shocking throne room scene and the movie later showed Luke project his essence across the galaxy.
Serkis himself, seems sure that the death was real but teased: “Look, it’s Star Wars, so you never know how life, or whether life can be come back to or not. Whether you can be resuscitated or brought back.”
He added: “I was shocked (by Snoke’s death). Dramatically, it felt absolutely right for that moment in the film, so I didn’t question it. I just think it’s a very, very important scene, so I didn’t question it.
“But I do, I know it’s left fans feeling like, that they were really searching for something there. And what I’m saying is, who knows?”
His last comments definitely imply that the subject is most definitely not closed yet but Snoke’s return, as exciting as it might be, opens up a huge problem in an already rather unbalanced final trilogy.
Kylo Ren needs Snoke to be dead so he can follow his arc as the Dark Side leader to its dramatic end. Much as many might love to find out more about Snoke’s origins and plans, surely it is more inetersting to see where an unleashed Kylo will lead us?
