State of the Union 2018: What time is Donald Trump’s State of Union address?

The speech is Mr Trump’s first State of the Union since taking office and is heralded as the President’s most important speech of the year.

And the hour long speech to Congress and the nation is required by the Constitution.

The President is required to “give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”

What time is the State of the Union?

Mr Trump will visit Capitol Hill to deliver his first State of the Union speech at 9.10pm EST tonight. The speech will be made in the UK at 2.10am GMT on Wednesday.

Where can I watch it?

The speech will be broadcast on all major news channels in the US and will be streamed online.

In the UK the speech will be broadcast on Sky News and the BBC News Channe

Will Melania be there? Who will go?

It is believed the US President’s wife will attend the speech.

The White Hoyse said it is Melania’s “plan” to return to Washington after an unscheduled trip to Florida.

The couple’s son Baron is not expected to attend.

The atmosphere in the House of Representatives chamber where Mr Trump will speak could be tense. Several Democratic lawmakers have said they would boycott the event.

Some Democratic women who will attend plan to wear black in support of the MeToo movement against sexual harassment.

What is the State of the Union address?

The address is an annual speech given by the sitting president that acts as a political and economic report on the previous 12 months.

It is delivered in the House of Representatives chamber and is an opportunity for Mr Trump to give an assessment of his first year in office as well as offering a glimpse at what policies to expect in the year ahead.

What will the speech be about?

Aides said the Republican president would use the televised speech to tout the benefits of a tax overhaul approved by the Republican-controlled Congress in December that was his first major legislative victory.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said: “The economy will be front and centre.”

He will promote a $1.7 trillion plan to rebuild America’s aging roads and other infrastructure, but he is not expected to offer many details.

Mr Trump is expected to address the various global crises that have persisted during his watch, such as North Korea’s nuclear challenge and Iran’s clout in the Middle East.

Ahead of Mr Trump’s speech, Republicans and Democrats were deeply divided over immigration. Lawmakers are facing a Feb. 8 deadline to reach a compromise on the issue and pass a new budget measure to avoid a second government shutdown.

To attract Democratic votes for an immigration deal, Mr Trump has said he is open to letting “Dreamers,” a group of immigrants brought into the country illegally as children, stay in the United States.

In return, he has demanded funding for a wall on the border with Mexico and measures to curb family sponsorship of immigrants, proposals that have failed to gain traction with Democrats in the past.

Who will respond for the Democrats?

The Democratic Party’s response will be given by rising star Massachusetts Rep. Joseph Kennedy III.

The grandson of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy told the Boston Globe: “From healthcare to economic justice to civil rights, the Democratic agenda stands in powerful contrast to President Trump’s broken promises to American families.”
