Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang uncovered: Why Arsenal are so desperate to sign Dortmund ace

The 28-year-old is set to become one of the biggest ever Premier League mavericks when he joins from Borussia Dortmund in a £55.5million move on £180,000 a week.

No one can argue with Aubameyang’s on-field stats. He has scored 141 times in just 213 appearances for the German club and was equally as prolific at his previous club Saint-Etienne.

But his off the field behaviour has seen plenty of complaints. From fans, pundits, staff and even his own team-mates.

He has been dropped and suspended by Borussia Dortmund for being late for training on no fewer than three occasions and also went AWOL to Milan, as well as taking part in a sponsorship film without his club’s permission.

Such behaviour did not go down well with his team-mates. And neither did his celebration when he produced a Spiderman-style Nike mask after scoring for Borussia against Schalke last season, a move which was branded “stupid” by his own skipper Marcel Schmelzer.

Team-mates have also been critical of his recent behaviour and discipline as it quickly became clear his time in Germany was coming to an end. Andre Schurrle recently said: “You never know what is going on in his head.”

Aubameyang likes his celebrations and will bring his own unique ways to the Premier League in a manner not seen since the days of Fabrizio Ravanelli and Jurgen Klinsmann.

He likes to put on masks and has also celebrated by playing the part of both Batman and Superman.

Aubameyang openly flaunts his considerable wealth, appearing to have more money than sense. His wide collection of cars which includes a Ferrari 812, a 488 Spyder, chrome Lamborghini Aventador, gold Audi R8 and a Porsche 918 Spyder will make anyone green with envy.

And Green just so happened to be his colour of choice at Saint-Etienne, bizarrely opting to paint a red Ferrari to green to match his side’s colours.

Also while with the French side, he warmed up for a match in 2012 a pair of Nike boots featuring £2,500 Swarovski crystals.

He is a hot head too, famed for speaking his mind and only recently engaged in a Twitter spat with a German journalist who criticised his impending move to England.

Brash and outrageously confident, Aubameyang has twice challenged the great Usain Bolt to a short distance sprint and claims to have been clocked in training running 30 metres in an incredible 3.7 seconds, faster than the first 30 per cent of Bolt’s 100metre world record time in 2009.

Certainly speed is his biggest attribute other than goals. Prior to subsequently falling out with the striker, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: “Pierre’s one of the fastest players who has ever played. I’ve never seen a player as explosive as he is.”

Aubameyang was born in the town of Laval in France but opted to play international football for Gabon, the country his father Pierre captained. Brothers Catilina and Willy also play, with the latter having a spell at Scottish club Kilmarnock.

Autograph hunters can expect a positive answer if they wait patiently outside Arsenal’s London Colney training base too as Aubameyang makes time for the fans.

“I’m often asked if it’s not annoying to do so many photos and sign so many autographs,” he said.

“No, I’ve always dreamed of that, so I’m not going to complain. When I was little, I’d have loved to have taken a photo with a star.”

Arsene Wenger certainly has plenty of work to keep Aubameyang in line and ensure his ego does not get too much for the dressing room.

But the Emirates Stadium could well be in line for a change of beat in more ways than one.

“He creates the music in the dressing room,” said Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic. “He is the DJ.”

Arsenal fans will be hoping they can dance along to Aubameyang’s rhythm on the pitch too.
