Massive number of earthquakes still hitting Kodiak Alaska – now shocks slam Oregon, Nevada

Quakes were hitting both Alsaka and mainland USA hourly and they were seemingly mirrored in Japan and the Philippines.

The zones are all on the terrifying Ring of Fire – a system of highly active tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust which are continually crashing into each other sparking the quakes.

Currently the movement is slight and the earthquakes manageable – but the plates are so massive that even a slight increase in intensity will spark earthquakes capable of levelling cities.

The USA’s Rocky Mountains, which run down the west coast, were formed by this massive tectonic activity.

CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE LIVE

Seismologists across the globe were monitoring the movement minute by minute – fearing the next one could be the quake which takes out California.

In recent hours the earthquakes have included:

A 4.3 magnitude hit Alaska, 283km of Kodiak in the early hours of Sunday morning at 12.38am.

A 2.5 magnitude quake, 94km of Coldfeet in Alaska at 1.01am.

Just a few hours later Kodiak in Alaska was struck by a 4.1 magnitude quake at 3.06am and again at 3.48am in the south east of Kodiak with the largest 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

At 6.22am, a 4.5 magnitude shock hit Kodiak in Alaska, and then again at 7am with a 3.3 magnitude quake.

The latest quake occurred in Kodiak Station, Alaska, measuring 2.9 magnitude.

A 4.2 magnitude quake also occurred in the Gulf of Alaska just before 7am this morning and was followed multiple quakes of around 3 to 3.5 magnitude at least once an hour.

Communities in Alaska are already trying to recover from a trail of destruction left after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck in the Gulf of Alaska shortly after midnight local time on Thursday.

Large cracks appeared in the walls of Kodiak City Fire Hall and oil was released at a local refinery.

Elsewhere on mainland USA the number of reported earthquakes was growing.

On Monday morning a magnitude 2.6 quake hit 15km south east of Soda Springs in Idaho at 12.53am.

And Nevada’s Currant also felt tremors from a 2.9 magnitude quake at 1.46am.

Just over an hour later, at 2.51am, Bandon in Oregon, experienced a 2.9 magnitude earthquake.

Quakes were also today reported as far south as Mexico, El Salvador and Chile – both on the same edge of the same tectonic plate.

And on the other side of the Pacific a 4.8magnitude quake was felt in Misawa Japan this morning, a 4.3 quake hit Babakantonggoh, Indonesia, an there were multiple tremors in Fiji and New Zealand.

The number of quakes in close proximity this week has triggered fears the Big One could be coming soon.

The huge surge in seismic activity in the last has sparked fears of a Big One an imminent earthquake of more than 8 magnitude that could have the power to decimate the US west coast.

From Indonesia, to Japan, to Hawaii and Alaska, the entire region sits in what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire – an extremely volatile chain of active volcanoes, tectonic plates and earthquake zones. Most of the world’s earthquakes happen in this region.
