The Birthday Party review: Harold Pinter’s 0th anniversary production

The play, about two sinister strangers who seek out an unemployed pianist in a seaside boarding house, skilfully marries the absurdist dramas and suburban comedies that were popular at the time but its effects now seem strained and its mysteries contrived.

Ian Rickson directs an accomplished cast among whom Toby Jones, a mixture of spoilt child and foolhardy dissident as the pianist, and Stephen Mangan, all lupine charm as his chief antagonist, stand out.

But this is a party for Pinter aficionados rather than the ordinary theatregoer.
