The shooting took place at the quiet town of Melcroft near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania state police have confirmed this afternoon.
At least five people have died and one more was taken to hospital, police announced at around 10am local time (3pm GMT) today.
Investigators have not yet determined whether the shooter is among the victims or whether he or she fled the scene.
The victims of the shooting, which took place overnight, were identified only as three men and two women.
