Russia FIRES BACK: British Defence Secretary ‘has LOST his grasp on reason!’

Mr Williamson said Russia has been researching UK infrastructure and how it connects to power supplies so the country is able to unleash chaos.

He said the Russian president Vladimir Putin could target interconnections that are able to link power between countries and could leave millions of people with no electricity.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mr Williamson said: “The plan for the Russians won’t be for landing craft to appear in the South Bay in Scarborough, and off Brighton Beach.

“They are going to be thinking, ‘How can we just cause so much pain to Britain? Damage its economy, rip its infrastructure apart, actually cause thousands and thousands and thousands of deaths, but actually have an element of creating total chaos within the country.”

Relations between Russia and Britain are strained.

Prime Minister Theresa May last year accused Moscow of military aggression and, in December, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said there was evidence showing Russian meddling in Western elections.

Mr Williamson also said: “Why would they keep photographing and looking at power stations, why are they looking at the interconnectors that bring so much electricity and so much energy into our country.

“If you could imagine the domestic and industrial chaos that this would actually cause. What they would do is cause the chaos and then step back.”

Russia’s defence minister responded by saying the comments showed he “has lost his understanding of what is reasonable”.

Moscow spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov claimed the comments were worthy of comedy sketch show in Monty Python.

The comments from Mr Williamson comes ahead of a review in which the Ministry of Defence will try to gain more money amid proposals for large scale cuts to the Armed Forces.
