Leeds badge: Championship giants odds-on to scrap new crest by end of the year

That is according to bookies Betway, who are offering odds of 1/2 that Elland Road chiefs go back to the drawing board on the ‘Leeds Salute’ crest.

The design, revealed by the club this morning, has been slated by fans and a petition calling on owner Andrea Radrizzani to think again has soared past 20,000 signatures.

Betway spokesman Alan Alger said: “The news of Leeds’ new badge has gone down like a lead balloon on social media and we think the club may decide to look for an alternative.

“At just 1/2, we feel Leeds will reopen discussions on the future of their club’s crest and replace the newly released one by the end of the year.”

The football club celebrates its 100th anniversary next year and the decision to redesign the badge was taken after consulting stakeholders on the next century.

bosses claim to have sought the opinions of more than 10,000 people during a six-month process before signing off on the final product.

It is due to replace the current crest on the club’s kit at the start of next season.

Managing director Angus Kinnear said: “In the past year we have worked very hard as a club to re-engage fans and the wider community across Leeds.

“We have seen season ticket sales soar and gates have regularly exceeded 32,000 at Elland Road – we are very grateful for the loyal and unwavering support we have received.

“Once we heard that there was a desire for change to help herald a new era for club, it became of primary importance that the new crest clearly reflected who we are.

“Everybody knows how proud and passionate the Leeds United fans are, but since I arrived at the club, I have been in awe at the unique connection between the fans and the team.

“Updating the crest is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we are proud to have a new crest that is authentic to Leeds United and honours the quality and loyalty of our fans.

“It is a symbol of ‘strength in unity’ and a proud expression of the club’s identity and history.”
