Manchester United were planning to sign a different player before Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United wrapped up a deal for Sanchez yesterday, with the 29-year-old moving to Old Trafford from fellow Premier League giants Arsenal.

The transfer has sent shockwaves rippling around the footballing world, with many stunned at United’s capture of the wing wizard.

Mere weeks ago, Manchester City were frontrunners for the player’s signature but their reluctance to bow to Sanchez’s demands ultimately saw them miss out.

And the Manchester Evening News say Manchester United were eyeing a deal for Bordeaux hotshot Malcom prior to the Sanchez deal.

Malcom has established himself as one of Ligue 1’s best young players.

The 20-year-old has netted seven goals from 22 games for the club so far this season.

Arsenal are also sniffing about despite their capture of Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

And Tottenham are keen as well.

United, the MEN say, cooled their interest once they found out that Sanchez was available.

And Mourinho reportedly deemed the youngster too raw and inexperienced to try and sign.

Meanwhile, Bordeaux boss Gus Poyet has ruled out the wing wizard leaving this month.

“I asked straight away if Malcom would be staying or not,” he said after being appointed on Saturday.

“They said yes. I said: ‘OK, now we can continue the discussion.'”

Bordeaux club president Stephane Martin is also adamant that Malcom will stay.

“It has been said and said again: He will not be leaving,” he added.

“He has said he wants to play in the Premier League one day. That is normal. What player wouldn’t want to play in England?

“There is no problem with Malcom.”
