‘There was a big thud’ Confusion as frozen airline poo falls on village

The excrement, weighing 12 kilograms, fell on Fazilpur Badli village, India, with a “big thud,” according to locals.

But it caused confusion among residents who thought the faeces was an “extra-terrestrial” object.

The excrement likely fell from a plane’s toilet mid-air as aeroplanes store human waste in custom-made tanks that are emptied once the plane lands.

However, the loos can leak while the plane is still in the air, aviation exerts told the BBC.

Modern aircraft cruise at high altitudes and freezing cold temperatures can cause liquids and human waste to freeze.

Frozen human waste occurs when it forms around the overflow of airline toilets before falling to earth.

Village elder and official Vivek Kalia told the BBC the block of ice had been sent for analysis – but they were certain that it was human waste.

He said: “It was a very heavy icy ball of ice which dropped from the skies early on Saturday morning.

“There was big thud and people of the village came running out of their homes to find out what had happened.

“Some villagers thought it was an extra-terrestrial object. Others thought it was some celestial rock and I’ve heard that they took samples home.”

According to The Times of India, many locals slipped a few pieces of the blocks of ice into their clothes and took them home and put them in the fridge.

A representative from the Indian Meteorological Department said the ice was definitely not a “meteorological phenomenon”.

Indian courts ruled airlines would face harsh fines if planes released excrement from their toilets in 2016.

But, just a year later, a woman was injured after she was hit in the shoulder by a chunk of ice, that fell from the sky and crashed onto her roof.

In Britain, the country’s Civil aviation Authority suggests that 25 bits of excrement fall from aeroplane toilets every year.
