Roger Federer makes hilarious joke about his wife after beating Marton Fucsovics

Federer sealed his place in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in routine fashion this morning winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-2.

He was playing in the day session for the first time during the tournament and there was a furore around it meaning he wasn’t playing in one of the prime slots.

It didn’t hamper his form despite a battling second set and he reckons the only difference was the tightness of his racket strings as the worst of the heat stayed away.

But he wasn’t sure where his wife Mirka had got to after she dashed off early.

“I was considering sunglasses and a towel for the beach but, no, the only thing is the racket strings are a bit tighter to help control the ball, but it’s not crazy hot today,” Roger Federer said.

“Other than at I just had to set my alarm at a different time. It’s a different rhythm playing in the day and not going to bed at 3am.

“We might go out for dinner tonight but Mirka has left already – she must have other plans!”

The 36-year-old world No 2 will face Tomas Berdych in the next round.

Federer won when they met in the third round last year and he reckons the Czech will be after payback.

“I am sure he wants to make me pay for that one,” said Federer.

“I saw his matches, he is standing up hitting big shots and I am glad he’s back.”
