Coco: Is the new Pixar movie a ‘RIP-OFF’ of The Book of Life?

Early last year the speculation began that Coco looked very much like Fox’s 2014 film, The Book of Life.

Movie fans have been arguing on social media over whether or not Pixar’s latest is in fact a rip-off of the earlier film.

Luckily have compared the two movies to find out.

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD

The first and most obvious comparison is that both movies are set during the Mexican festival, The Day of the Dead.

The belief being you don’t die again in the afterlife, as long as your friends and relatives remember you back on Earth.

The next similarity sees both protagonists Manolo and Miguel being discouraged by their families from guitar playing. Both end up in the Land of the Dead and have to work out how to return. While the final likeness sees both films’ antagonists meet their end by a giant bell.

However, it’s also pointed out that The Book of Life is a love story focused on the themes of The Day of the Dead, while Coco is a family film that has the Land of the Dead as a backdrop to the plot.

He said: “I’ve heard a lot of surprising stories of kids crying in Coco. At the end of the day, we don’t make movies for kids, we make them for everybody – for adults and ourselves. We just make sure they’re appropriate for kids.

“The first time I put music up against the end of Toy Story 3 – when Andy is giving his toys to Bonnie – it brought tears to my eyes.

“[The same thing happened when] I put together the scene at the end of Coco in storyboard form – it definitely felt emotional to me even though we weren’t using our real actors yet.”

Coco is out now.
