Sergio Aguero bags his hat-trick, but the credit should go to architect Leroy Sane, who navigated his way through three Newcastle defenders before serving it on a plate to the Argentine to convert.

80: OK, we’ve got 10 minutes remaining folks. Newcastle are looking dangerous on the break but their opportunities have dried up over the past few minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne is close to putting it to bed after sending a bending shot inches wide of the post.

77: I can confirm that the first goal has been officially awarded to Sergio Aguero.

76: This is really exciting stuff now. Somehow Manchester City have gone from complete control to looking vulnerable. Another change for Newcastle. Dwight Gayle is on in place of Joselu.

73: What an utter shambles. Ederson, who’s looked so cool until last weekend, drops the ball and kicks it straight to Mo Diame. The midfielder smacks the rebound straight at the goalkeeper, and it’s cleared. Very are rattled every time Newcastle break forward.

70: Wow, I thought that was the hat-trick. Darlow somehow turns Sterling’s powerful effort onto the post before Aguero rifles the rebound into side-netting.

67: Eh?! Newcastle have pulled one back from absolutely nothing.

There’s a decent pass forward by Ciaran Clark and Jacob Murphy runs clear before clipping the ball over the onrushing Ederson.

I’m stunned how cool that finish was. Ice cold.

66: Only Wayne Rooney (15) has scored more Premier League goals versus Newcastle than Sergio Aguero.

60: There’s 30-minutes remaining in this rather boring game of attack vs defence.

59: Newcastle don’t have any interests in scoring. I thought that City’s 82.5% possession in the first half would reduce, but if anything it’s gone up.

56: Fernandinho stays down after an innocuous clash with Joselu. Didn’t really see much in that. The City medical staff are on the field with the midfielder flat on his back.

53: City look to play a short-corner but it’s too intricate, even for them, and the ball rolls straight out of play. Newcastle showing absolutely nothing.

50: Apparently this Sergio Aguero goal is still under review from the ‘dubious goals panel.’ I’ll let you know what they decide ASAP.

48: Quick start from the hosts, who work their way into a shooting position but Raheem Sterling plays a reverse pass that goes missing.

45: We’re back underway folks. Neither manager has made a change at the break, and I highly doubt there will be a change in tactics from either side.

HT: Eleven shots, six on target and 83.3% possession. When you put it like that, one goal seems pretty unimpressive… but you fear for Rafa Benitez’s side as they tire in the second half.

42: Kevin De Bruyne has provided more assists in the Premier League this season than any other player.

39: Close! Sergio Aguero lays it off to KDB, whose powerful effort is tipped wide by Darlow. Can’t see this staying 1-0 for very long folks.

37: OK, so Newcastle’s Plan A is out the window. Where do they go from here? The Toon haven’t changed tactics as Manchester City continue to pour forward.

35: And there’s the breakthrough!

Manchester City deservedly take the lead through Sergio Aguero, who is claiming to have headed Kevin De Bruyne’s cross into the far corner.

I say claim because it’s almost impossible to tell whether the Argentine actually touched the ball. He ran away celebrating and he’s my Fantasy Football captain, so that’s good enough for me!

33: Sterling rifles a loose ball straight at Karl Darlow. That might be his first save of the evening.

32: Woaaahhh, you know things are bad when KDB sends a free-kick about 15 miles high and wide of the Newcastle goal. very poor indeed.

31: What’s happened to Sergio Aguero? He’s probably had less touches then Joselu today. I’ll probably end up eating my words but he’s fsiled to find space or make himself available for the pass.

Seriously regretting making him my Fantasy Football captain…

28: Danger for the Magpies but Joselu races back to help out defensively and the ball is cleared out towards Atsu on the left. It’s back in the Newcastle half in the blink of an eye and referee Paul Tierney ignores KDB’s plea for a free-kick after Shelvey went in with a tough challenge.

Mo Diame is down for Newcastle. I think he’ll be alright but a precious few seconds tick away nonetheless.

25: It’s not particularly pleasant on the eye, but Newcastle are doing a good job. It’s still goalless and City are looking a little frustrated with their lack of clear-cut chances.

22: Disallowed goal! Raheem Sterling has the ball in the back of the net but it won’t count. City break at speed with Silva bending the ball over to Sterling to convert at the back post, but he’s a fraction offside.

19: Oh boy, this is going to be a long evening. Newcastle have their two banks of four and they don’t look like shifting. City are having tons of possession but haven’t really created anything of note. They’ll have to be quicker than this to make the breakthrough.

16: Ederson is now playing as a sweeper. He’s virtually on the half-way line knowing Joselu will need a minor miracle to win a clearance.

13: City pressuring the Magpies at the moment and they force a corner. Kyle Walker tries a shot from outside the area but it’s way off target. Pep Guardiola gives him a round of applause like a mother would for her child at sports day…

10: I know it’s easier said than done, but Newcastle need to be better without the ball. There’s no attempt to push forward and they’ve left Joselu completely isolated.

8: David Silva runs beyond the Newcastle defence and pulls it back from the byline but John Stones, who’s never scored a Premier league goal for Manchester City, snatches it wide.

6: Remember that bright start I was talking about? Well, it’s subsided and City are back in control. KDV sends a low corner into the area but Lascelles manages to scramble it clear.

3: The BIG question was; would Rafa Benitez employ the same negative tactics he was berated for in the reverse fixtures? And the answer is NO. The Toon are trying to press in the early stages and almost got in behind the City defence with Atsu.

1: Aaaaaand we’re off on a freezing night in Manchester. Temperatures like these don’t scare Toon supporters, they’re making a proper racket in the away end!

Liverpool ran riot in the second half, scoring three goals in nine minutes, before City responded to make the scoreline respectable.

But they have a great chance to return to winning ways and extend their 12-point lead at the top against a Newcastle side struggling at the wrong end of the table.
