Coco: ‘New Pixar movie will have adults and kids in TEARS’

Released this weekend, the latest film from Pixar, finds a young boy in the Land of the Dead on a mission to find the truth behind his family’s history.

But parents shouldn’t worry, not only has Coco had incredible reviews, but despite claims of tears from audiences, director Lee Unkrich is adamant it’s suitable for kids.

Having helmed Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2 and 3, the filmmaker is one of Pixar’s best.

Now in an interview with the Independent, he admits Coco has some emotional moments, just like his past creations.

Unkrich said: “I’ve heard a lot of surprising stories of kids crying in Coco.

“At the end of the day, we don’t make movies for kids, we make them for everybody – for adults and ourselves. We just make sure they’re appropriate for kids.

“The first time I put music up against the end of Toy Story 3 – when Andy is giving his toys to Bonnie – it brought tears to my eyes.

“[The same thing happened when] I put together the scene at the end of Coco in storyboard form – it definitely felt emotional to me even though we weren’t using our real actors yet.

“I have to hold on to that because it’s then going to be years before we actually animated the scene, so I have to remember how it was emotionally affecting and not fall into the trap of wanting to change it.”

The new Pixar movie has so far won 32 awards and is expected to pick up the Best Animated Feature gong at the Oscars.

Coco is out now.
