Use Amazon Prime? Your monthly bill might be about to go up

Amazon Prime members in the US will see the cost of their monthly bill rise.

Customers in the US will see the monthly price of Amazon Prime rise from $10.99 to $12.99.

If Amazon Prime customers in the US choose to pay monthly, they will be paying $155.88 in total across a 12-month period.

However, Amazon US aren’t raising the price of the annual fee – which still stands at $99.

The price rise appears to be driving customers towards the upfront, yearly fee.

Existing Amazon Prime customers in America will see the price rise from February 18, but it kicks in from today for new members.

It remains to be seen if Amazon Prime customers in the UK will see a similar price rise.

Express.co.uk has contacted Amazon to ask if customers in Britain will also see a similar increase.

However, they did confirm to TrustedReviews that the price hike was only for the US right now, but couldn’t comment on future plans.

In the UK, Amazon Prime costs £7.99 if they decide to pay each month or £79 to pay upfront each year.

Amid the price rise, Amazon have continued to add to the benefits that Prime subscribers get.

The Prime Music library continues to grow while Prime Reading offers access thousands of books, comics, magazines and articles.

Prime subscribers can also store unlimited photos online while they also get a 30-minute head start on some Lightning Deals thanks to Early Access.

The price rise comes as Amazon are stepping up their efforts in producing their own original content for Prime Video.

Amazon laid down a marker last November when they acquired the TV rights for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The Amazon Prime Video series will be a prequel to the iconic trilogy of films directed by Peter Jackson.

Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios, said: “The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen.

“We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

While Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust, added: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings.

“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
