Instagram activity status – How to turn off last seen feature in iOS and Android

has added a new ‘show activity status’ setting which adds a last seen feature to the photo sharing social network.

The new feature is now enabled by default and shows how many minutes ago a user was last active, if they’re active now or if they’re “typing” back.

The Instagram activity status feature is viewable inside the Direct Messages section of the iOS and Android apps.

The information is only shared with people you follow as well as anyone that you message privately.

So, not all of your Instagram followers will be able to see when you were last online, and whether you’re active now.

But thankfully, there is a way to turn this feature off, Digital Trends reported.

To turn it off in the Instagram app for Android or iOS, head to your profile – and then click the Settings option.

For iPhone users this will appear like a cog and on Android it’ll appear like three vertical dots.

Then, scroll down the menu until you find the switch next to ‘Show activity status’.

And then just simply switch that off.

The news comes after users of another popular Facebook-owned app were put on alert.

WhatsApp, like Instagram, is owned by social networking giant Facebook.

And users of the popular chat app have been put on alert about a terrifying new strain of malware that has the power to steal messages from your smartphone.

WhatsApp users have been warned about the newly discovered Skygofree malware which can steal your private messages and secretly record conversations.

The spyware affects Android devices, and is capable of stealing WhatsApp messages via Accessibility Services.

It can also record audio through a smartphone’s microphone when an infected device is in a specified location.

Kaspersky Lab added that the malware has nothing to do with broadcasting giant Sky, or the Sky Go product, service or app.

They said: “The Skygofree Android implant is one of the most powerful spyware tools that we have ever seen for this platform.

“As a result of the long-term development process, there are multiple, exceptional capabilities: usage of multiple exploits for gaining root privileges, a complex payload structure, never-before-seen surveillance features such as recording surrounding audio in specified locations.”

Kaspersky Lab said Skygofree was created at least three years ago, and that the malware has been spread via websites operated by cyber attackers.

The online security experts added that the malware has infected a number of Android devices in Italy, the country they believe it originates from.
