Roger Federer admits making this Australian Open request because of heat

The Swiss booked his spot in the third round with a routine 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 win over Jan-Lennard Struff in which he barely broke sweat and utilised his powerful serve to keep point short.

His match finished at 11.30pm local time when the temperature had dropped to 31 degrees Celsius, but it had reached 39 during the afternoon, just one degree short of the threshold for play to be stopped.

And Federer said he probably wasn’t the only one asking to play in the cooler night slot.

“There’s maybe 60 guys asking for stuff so I’m one of those guys, yes,” Federer said after his second-round win.

“Possibly [I have a more leverage].

“It’s not my call, it’s their call.

“There’s a guy like Novak, there’s other guys who they’re going to listen to, of course the Aussies.

“Maybe also TV decides, I don’t know what you guys ask for at night.”

Djokovic in fact revealed that he had requested to play during the day, a decision he perhaps regretted when he dropped the first set against Gael Monfils.

However, the Serb battled back to win through in four sets as Monfils wilted, even calling the doctor for advice because he was “super dizzy”.

And Djokovic sympathised with the Frenchman, even questioning whether the match should have been happening at all.

“I think, you know, there are certain days where you just have to, as a tournament supervisor, recognise that you might need to give players few extra hours until it comes down,” Djokovic said.

“I understand there is a factor of tickets.

“If you don’t play matches, people will be unhappy.

“You have to take into consideration different angles before making a big call like that.”

And while Federer will hope to continue his streak of playing in the evening, the 36-year-old believes he could have dealt with the heat if he had to.

“I’m happy I didn’t have to go from night to day and maybe back to night so I’m happy to stay in the same rhythm,” Federer added.

“But I wouldn’t have minded playing during the day. I hope I thrive under those conditions too.

“If you want to get to the top, you’ve got to be able to play in all conditions. But sure, it’s helpful to play now rather than during the day.”
