Fortnite map update COUNTDOWN – Battle Royale patch release date, PS4, Xbox One start time

players are gearing up for a big update that will offer major changes to the Battle Royale map on PS4, Xbox One and PCs.

The Fortnite map update was revealed on Monday, with it giving players “more places to land, explore, and fight in”.

The current Fortnite map has what Epic Games described as ten ‘points of interest’.

The new, updated Battle Royale map will boost the number of ‘points of interest’ to 18 locations that players can fight in.

Looking at the current and new maps side-by-side shows the upcoming update has many more locations, and existing ones look more detailed and varied.

Epic Games also told Express.co.uk that the patch will bring the new city area that fans have been calling for.

The ‘Tilted Towers’ area features multiple tall buildings with the verticality adding a new element to combat in Battle Royale.

Epic Games has confirmed that the Fortnite map update will be arriving on PS4, Xbox One and PCs this week.

So far they have not given a exact date for when the update will be going live, but Express.co.uk is expecting it to drop either on Wednesday or Thursday.

It remains to be seen whether Fortnite servers could also go down for maintenance ahead of the big Battle Royale map update being released.

David Spalinski, Lead Level Designer for Fortnite, recently spoke to Express.co.uk about the upcoming update.

He said: “When we launched the Fortnite Battle Royale mode in September, we knew we had a solid foundation for the map, but there were things we knew we could do to improve the experience, as well as things we’ve learned from playing with and listening to the community.

“The map update that’s coming addresses a lot of that stuff.

“One thing we’ve done is added more points of interest to the map.

“This should give players more places to land, explore, and fight in.

“One example is ‘Tilted Towers’, which is a city area, something players have been asking for.

“This space features multiple tall buildings, that offer some fun verticality to encounters.

“Another example is ‘Shifty Shafts’, which is an underground space that’s a bit more claustrophobic.”

Epic Games also this week revealed that Fortnite has hit a new milestone as it battles with PUBG for Battle Royale living room supremacy.

Epic Games previously revealed during the Game Awards in December 2017 that Fortnite had 30million players in total around the globe.

Fortnite also hit 1.3million concurrent users during the first weekend of December 2017.

And now the hit online game has passed another major milestone, with Epic Games revealing on Monday that Fortnite has hit over 40million players in total.

The new record for concurrent players in Fortnite now also stands at two million.

The latest Fortnite numbers comes after PUBG revealed players stats for the PC and recently released Xbox One versions at the end of December.

On December 21 2017 it was revealed PUBG had over 30million players across both PC and Xbox One.

PUBG hit that landmark in less than a year, which has a similar adoption rate to other online heavyweights.

Overwatch hit 30million players after around 11 months on sale, while the original Destiny reached 20million players after eights months availability.

PUBG has been a huge hit on Xbox One since it was released in December, so we’re expected that 30million player count will have gone up by now.

And the other major factor between PUBG and Fortnite is PUBG is a paid-for game – whereas Fortnite Battle Royale is free-to-play.
