Pokemon Go developer Niantic has bad news for iOS users.
Niantic warns that an upcoming Pokemon Go update will finally end support for older Apple devices on February 28.
This includes the iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPad (4th generation), iPad (3rd generation), iPad Mini (1st generation) and the iPad 2.
“In an upcoming update to Pokemon GO, we will end support for Apple devices not capable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models,” Niantic explains.
“This change is a result of improvements to Pokemon GO that push the application beyond the capabilities of the operating systems on such devices.
“This change will take effect on 02/28/2018. After that date, Trainers using affected devices may no longer be able to access their Pokemon GO accounts from that device, or use their PokéCoins or other items in their Bags.”
It’s likely the change has something to do with the new and improved AR features in Pokemon Go.
The new augmented reality AR+ features are only available on devices running iOS 11. This includes the iPhone 6S and newer models.
As part of the new update, Pokemon will be more accurately positioned based on their surroundings, while their size will increase or decrease depending on how close you are.
Even better is that players can now capture Pokemon in a number of different ways.
“AR+ mode also adds new dynamic gameplay to Pokemon GO encounters that will provide Trainers with more ways to catch Pokemon,” Niantic explains.
“Trainers can now get closer to a Pokemon to receive a special capture bonus, but Pokemon are aware of the physical proximity of Trainers, so they must approach carefully as they may flee if a person comes too close too quickly.
“Getting closer to a Pokemon using AR+ has unique gameplay benefits, including being awarded the new Expert Handler bonus, which provides more XP and Stardust.”
