Samsung Galaxy S9 could have this one BIG advantage over the Galaxy S8

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is one of the most eagerly anticipated smartphones of 2018, with the successor to the Galaxy S8 set to launch imminently.

It had been rumoured that Samsung would use CES 2018 to give the world their first glimpse of the Galaxy S9.

However, the Samsung presentation at the big tech event in Las Vegas came and went without a mention of the successor to the S8.

CES 2018 is still running until this Friday, so there is still time for Samsung to spring a surprise this week.

If not, the next major tech event that the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus could be announced at would be the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February.

And there is one great feature that the upcoming Samsung flagship could boast.

SamMobile have revealed rumours on the different Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus models that Samsung could offer.

In most regions, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is available with 64GB of storage, but in South Korea and Hong Kong the Plus is on sale with 128G of storage.

And it’s been rumoured the S9 and S9 Plus could come with a wide range of internal storage.

It’s been claimed Samsung will ship two versions of the Galaxy S9 – one with 64GB of storage and one with 128GB of storage.

Both models will allegedly have 4GB of RAM.

While the Galaxy S9 Plus, which is rumoured to have 6GB of RAM, will reportedly have four different storage options available.

It will allegedly come with either 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB of storage.

The latter storage option will only reportedly be available in select markets and will be in limited quantities.

The big increase in internal storage would mark a huge improvement for the S9 and S9 Plus over the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus also had a MicroSD slot so users could expand the storage if they wanted to.

And if the S9 and S9 Plus follows suit and has the same feature, it means users could have tonnes of space to play with.

The news comes after it was revealed the Samsung Galaxy S9 looks set to include improved facial recognition technology.

The South Korean technology company dropped the hint during the announcement for its latest smartphone processor, the Exynos 9 Series 9810.

Alongside the Qualcomm SnapDragon 845, the new processor is widely-tipped to power the latest generation of Samsung smartphones.

As a result, the features of the Exynos 9 chipset offer clues to what customers can expect from the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Samsung highlights the Exynos’ ability to execute “realistic face-tracking filters” as well as “stronger security when unlocking a device with one’s face”.

If that sounds familiar, it’s likely because these are two of the biggest features of the all-new iPhone X.

Apple’s new flagship handset ditches the fingerprint scanner in favour of advanced facial recognition courtesy of its TrueDepth camera system.

It also uses facial tracking to mirror the users’ facial movements for its animoji characters.

By the sounds of it, Samsung’s new handset will be capable of very similar functionality.

According to Samsung, “This cutting-edge technology allows the processor to accurately recognise people or items in photos for fast image searching or categorisation, or through depth sensing, scan a user’s face in 3D for hybrid face detection. 

“By utilising both hardware and software, hybrid face detection enables realistic face-tracking filters as well as stronger security when unlocking a device with one’s face.

“For added security, the processor has a separate security processing unit to safeguard vital personal data such as facial, iris and fingerprint information.”

It’s been rumoured that the Galaxy S9 will have a release date in March – one month earlier than the S8 release.

The S8 and S8 Plus were priced respectively at £679 and £779, so it’s unlikely the S9 and S9 Plus will launch at a lower price point.
