Forget Kodi, Plex just announced a MAJOR update to its media server

Plex has confirmed a number of new features for its hugely-successful media server.

Like rival software Kodi, the media server is capable of playing a huge variety of file formats, including video, audio and photos from users’ collection.

Plex has companion apps on a range of platforms, so users can stream content to their smartphone, smart TV, on desktop or streaming set-top boxes.

The media server announced support for podcasts in a forthcoming update.

Both video and audio podcasts will be supported, Plex has confirmed.

The announcement was made during a presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Offline listening will be available on certain Plex apps.

Plex will also learn from your viewing and listening habits to suggest other similar shows.

For example, if you binge your way through a new television show on the media server, Plex might recommend the official companion podcast for you.

According to TechCrunch, Plex is in the “early stages” of talks about licensing its software to companies that build TV tuner-antennas combo boxes.

This could dramatically extend the reach of the media server software.
