Manchester United boss Mourinho angry after he was forced to choose Matic over Perisic

Manchester United spent big to bring three new faces to Old Trafford in the summer, with Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Matic all arriving.

Mourinho was, however, known to be desperate to bring in a fourth player with Inter Milan star Perisic earmarked as his No1 choice.

The Croatia international ended up staying at the San Siro where he has since helped Inter challenge for the Scudetto under Luciano Spalletti.

But the Manchester Evening News say Manchester United’s failure to sign the forward still rankles with Mourinho.

The Red Devils boss has cut an increasingly frustrated figure in recent weeks.

Aside from exchanging barbs with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, Mourinho has also taken aim at Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp for their heavy spending at Manchester City and Liverpool.

And the MEN say Mourinho’s anger with United’s transfer business stems from the choice he had to make in the summer.

United supposedly gave the 54-year-old £150m to spend on new recruits.

And when over £100m of that was spent on Lukaku and Lindelof alone, the board made him choose who his final signing would be.

Mourinho consequently went for Matic, reuniting with the midfielder who he previously managed at Chelsea.

Yet with United’s forwards misfiring, it may have been the wrong decision.

Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have all faded after bright starts to the season.

Only Jesse Lingard has looked the part in recent weeks with the England international in the form of his career.
