‘I ALMOST DIED pumping my own petrol’ Outraged residents struggle to fill their OWN cars

Governor Kate Brown signed legislation last year that went into effect on Monday and residents have already taken to social media to express their disgust at self-serve pumps.

Mike Perrone posted: “I’ve lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas.

“I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and almost died doing it. This a service only qualified people should perform.

“I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas.”

The fiery response to the new law came after a local news station issued a poll on Facebook on whether it was a good idea.

Sandy Franklin added: “I don’t even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian… I say NO THANKS! I don’t want to smell like gasoline!”

Another wrote: “Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly. Besides, I don’t want to go to work smelling of gas when I get it on my hands or clothes. I agree Very bad idea.”

In response to the outrage, Jim Bryant joked that he had decided to move to the West Coast state to “teach people how to pump their own gas”.

He said: “FEAR NOT OREGON!!!!

“I’ve decided to move to Oregon to open a school to teach people how to pump their own gas.”

The post received over 5,000 replies and over 29,000 likes on Facebook.

Since Monday Oregonians have been pictured as they struggle to decipher the art of the self-service pump.

One picture shows a vehicle that has dragged the fuel hose form a petrol station after the customer presumably forgot to reattach it.

Another shows a resident attempting to fill up their car from a distance as petrol splashes on the side of the car.

Over 65 years ago Oregon enacted a law that protected residents from filling up their own cars with petrol.

Those who support the ban claim that the ban created jobs and safety for locals.

Until the law was passed, Oregon and New Jersey were the only two states in the US that forbid customers from filling up their own tanks.
