Michael Wolff has unveiled some huge new details with the debut of his book

Michael Wolff, 64, hit out over Mr Trump’s claims that his book Fire and Fury: Inside The Trump White House was a fantasy and “full of lies”.

Claiming his book is based on about 200 interviews with White House staff, Wolff said: “They all say he is like a child. And what they mean by that is he has a need for immediate gratification. It’s all about him.”

Speaking on TV in the US, Wolff continued: “This man does not read, does not listen. So he’s like a pinball, just shooting off the sides.”

The book hit the streets yesterday with the release date brought forward after Mr Trump’s legal team attempted to block publication.

Bookshops have reported people queueing outside to secure a copy with one in Washington sold out within minutes.

The huge publicity generated by Mr Trump’s reaction sent it straight to the top of the internet retailer Amazon’s worldwide best-seller chart.

An excerpt has former chief strategist Steve Bannon saying: “He’s lost his stuff.”

Former White House deputy chief of staff Katie Walsh is also quoted as saying that working for Trump is “like trying to figure out what a child wants”.

Wolff said many interviews were taped.

He was certainly and absolutely in every way comfortable with his reporting.

He said: “My credibility is being questioned by a man who has less credibility than perhaps anyone who has ever walked on Earth at this point.”

Wolff claims that Mr Trump is increasingly forgetful, repeating stories word-for-word inside 10 minutes and fails to recognise friends.

To hide his failings from the public, Wolff claims the White House hatched a plan to have interviewers submit questions beforehand.

Mr Trump’s mental state has continually been questioned by Democrats and some want to impeach him.

Amid claims in the US that Mr Trump may suffer dementia, Wolff said in another body blow: “Everybody was painfully aware of the increasing pace of his repetitions.”

The author, who says he was provided widespread access to the White House, claims the President’s advisers and family “all believe he was incapable of functioning in his job” within months of taking office.

The new book makes a series of jaw-dropping claims.

Mr Trump is described as a womaniser and his marriage to his wife Melania, who he apparently rarely sees, is described as “perplexing” to outsiders.

The couple sleep in separate bedrooms and he demanded a lock on his bedroom door.

First Lady Melania Trump wept on the night her husband won the election, he said, and the tears “were not of joy”.

And they were “visibly” fighting on inauguration day, it is claimed. Bannon described Don Jr’s Trump Tower meeting with Russians as “treasonous and unpatriotic” and said there’s “zero” chance Mr Trump did not know about the meeting.

The Trump team thought he would lose and he orders fast food so he’s not poisoned, told staff not to touch his toothbrush and strips his own bedsheets.

He regularly sits in bed eating a cheeseburger at 6.30pm while calling his friends and watching three TVs.

Mr Trump was angry that A-list stars had snubbed his inauguration.

The new President “found the White House to be vexing and even a little scary”.

His daughter Ivanka had a plan with her husband Jared Kushner that she would be “the first woman president”.

Rupert Murdoch called the President a “******* idiot”.

Trump’s aides say he “is no more than semi-literate”.

Ivanka does not escape unscathed. The book labels her “dumb as a brick”.

Mr Trump’s lawyers said they were considering libel charges.

He tweeted that the book was full of “lies, misrepresentations and sources that don’t exist”.

Last night, asked if the publicity had helped sales, Mr Wolff smiled and said: “Where do I send the box of chocolates?”
