Ferrari in Michael Schumacher update: Formula 1 team pays tribute to ex-F1 racing legend

The Italian team wrote on Twitter: “Today Michael turns 49, our thoughts are always with him. #Keepfighting #ForzaMichael.”

Thousands of tributes poured in on social media sites yesterday as the seven-time world champion reached 49.

The German motor racing star, who has a worldwide fan base, was left fighting for his life after a tragic skiing accident in the French Alps four years ago when he suffered catastrophic head injuries.

Mr Schumacher was put into a medically-induced coma after he fell and hit his head on a rock while skiing with his son at the Meribel resort in the French Alps on December 29, 2013.

In the wake of the crash, the record-breaking Formula 1 driver underwent two life-saving operations at Grenoble Hospital, before being transferred to a medical facility in Lausanne, Switzerland in April 2014.

He was discharged from hospital in September 2014 and is believed to be constantly cared for at his home in Switzerland during his rehabilitation.

His family has closely guarded his privacy and released very little information on any possible recovery.

He is believed to be cared for by a 20-strong team of nurses and physicians at his custom built mansion on the shores of Lake Geneva.

His manager, Sabine Kehmas, has continually stated there will no be official update on his health.

She previously said: “Michael’s health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard.

“We have to protect his intimate sphere.

“Legally seen and in the longer term, every statement related to his health would diminish the extent of his intimate sphere.”

Schumacher won two titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995 before five consecutive world drivers’ titles with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004.

His records of seven titles, 91 career victories, fastest laps (77) and most races won in a single season (13), remain unbeaten.
