Donald Trump MUST take STRONGER role in international diplomacy – and help shake EU up

US President Donald Trump was praised for calling out the “brutal and corrupt” Iranian regime after government forces cracked down on protesters.

But former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, said the President should prepare to rally the European Union to help the people of Iran.

Mr Bolton said: “He needs to go to the Europeans and say ‘get off your moral balance beam here and come down on the side of the people of Iran.’

“Iranian people need to know that the world is watching and is on their side but we need to take some concrete action.”

Protesters in Iran have been demonstrating against the falling living standards in the country, with marches spreading as far as capital Tehran.

There were even calls for the removal or death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the cities of Khoramabad, Zanjan and Ahvaz.

Mr Bolton said it was important for Mr Trump to speak out against the Iranian regime and called on the President to withdraw from the highly-criticised Iran nuclear deal signed with Tehran in 2015 to ease tensions between the two countries.

Speaking to Fox News, the former ambassador to the UN continued: “I think it’s important for the President to speak out in support of the Iranian people.

“The United States does not want to be in a position – as we were in Hungary in 1956 as we were in Iraq in 1991 – where we called the opposition out into the streets, they came and we watched them be slaughtered by the Soviets and by Saddam Hussain respectively.

“I think the President should flat out withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, call back into force all the sanctions that have been suspended. He ought to go to Congress and say “quit fiddling around.’ Let’s get even stronger sanctions.”

Protesters have attacked banks and government buildings and burned a police motorcycle.

Ahmad Khatami, a hardline cleric who leads Friday prayers in the capital Tehran, called for capital punishment for those chanting slogans against the values of the Islamic Republic.
