Movies set in 2018: From Terminator and Rollerball to Nazis on the moon in Iron Sky

Terminator Salvation

Probably the most forgettable movie in the Terminator franchise, this fourth entry only had a cameo for Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Sadly the star of the first three was busy being Governor of California, but he did make a brief appearance when a Terminator with his likeness appeared off the Skynet production line to beat up Christian Bale.

After all, unlike previous Terminators, this wasn’t a time travel movie but set in the post-apocalyptic future – the year 2018 – where Bale’s John Connor is leading the human resistance against the machines.

It’s still a few years off the premise of the first Terminator movie, since Kyle Reese – who is sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor and father John – is just a boy here.

Rollerball

Back in 1975 this dystopian sci-fi hit cinema screens, starring James Caan.

The plot saw the world of 2018 as a global corporate state and focused on Rollerball, a violent sport.

A critically-panned remake was released in 2002, but set in present day instead of the future.

Iron Sky

One of the most wacky films of recent years has to be this comedy sci-fi about lunar Nazis.

After being defeated in 1945, a group of Nazis fled to the moon where they built a space fleet to return and conquer the Earth in 2018.

A sequel called Iron Sky: The Coming Race, will be released next month, featuring Hitler and his pet T Rex revealing that he, the US President, Jesus Christ and Vladimir Putin are secretly a reptilian humanoid race.

Brick Mansions

Set in 2018’s dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions now only house criminals, so the area has been ghettoised and walled off to protect the rest of the city.

The late Paul Walker plays an undercover cop, struggling to bring his other’s killer to justice.

Meanwhile he has to work with an ex-con to save the city from a plot to destroy it.
