Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho is misunderstood… you only have to ask my wife – Karanka

Those are the thoughts of former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka.

Mourinho has often been depicted during his time at United as being miserable, even though he has enjoyed success at Old Trafford, winning the EFL Cup and Europa League in his debut campaign in charge.

Karanka knows the Portuguese well having served as Mourinho’s assistant during their time together at Real Madrid.

And Karanka is well placed to cast judgement over Mourinho’s character.

When asked what he thinks about Mourinho, Karanka told The Times: “Ninety-five per cent of the day, Jose is fun, and the other 5 per cent is just with the media.

“When my wife met Jose, she was surprised. He was not the person she was used to seeing on the TV.

“He’s funny, a very good father, very good friend. He’s very loyal.

“In my case, he transmitted me all his confidence and I gave him all my best.”

Karanka also reckons Mourinho has one thing in common with his rival Premier League bosses – the desire to win.

“Jose is the same as [Antonio] Conte, the same as Pep [Guardiola], the same as Arsene [Wenger], the same as Jürgen [Klopp],” he added.

“Different personalities, different qualities, different style, but all of them want to win.

“Football and life is about winning.

“It was good for Jose when he arrived at Real that Guardiola was at Barcelona, because of the challenge.

“It is good for Jose that Pep is now here. Competition is good.”
