Federer touched down in Perth yesterday in anticipation of the Australian Open warm-up competition.
The Swiss star enters the new season ranked second in the world, behind only Rafael Nadal.
However, he hopes to de-thrown the Spaniard and reclaim his world title by the end of 2018.
But at 36 years old there are questions hanging over how long he will be able to perform at the top of his game.
And he says that for as long as he enjoys playing he will continue to participate in the sport.
“At this age, I have a lot of pleasure doing what I’m doing, because if I didn’t enjoy it I would not do it anymore,” Federer told Radio Australia.
“I’m going to be very careful of selecting the tournaments I’ll play, and I think anything I win from here on forward is like a bonus.
“As long as I’m healthy and happy to play I’ll keep doing that and then we’ll see when the end is.”
Federer and Nadal both won two Grand Slams each last season.
And they will be hoping for similar success this year.
But it may be more difficult as Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have returned from their respective injuries for the Australian Open, which gets underway on January 15.
