Xbox One Backwards Compatibility UPDATE: First 2018 games news confirmed for January

While the tech giant has confirmed that they won’t be adding new titles this week, they will be launching new game in 2018.

And it just so happens that we know the first Xbox One Backwards Compatibility games update coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360 next year.

While not new titles being added to the library, January 2018 will see two Backwards Compatible games given away for free, as part of Games with Gold.

And now we know that both Army of Two and Tomb Raider: Underworld will be those games.

The announcement was made earlier this week, with Microsoft providing an update before the start of the holidays.

Underworld launches on first, and will be be available until the usual mid-month games refresh.

It will then be replaced on January 16 by Army of Two, both of which were made Backwards Compatible earlier this year.

Army of Two was the most voted for title of the two, to be made part of the library, garnering over 13,000 votes for its inclusion. Tomb Raider Underworld, meanwhile, grabbed around 9,000.

The full lineup for Games with Gold January 2018 can be found below:

  • The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III: Available January 1 to 31 on Xbox One
  • Zombi: Available January 16 to February 15 on Xbox One
  • Tomb Raider Underworld: Available January 1 to 15 on Xbox One and Xbox 360
  • Army of Two: Available January 16 to 31 on Xbox One and Xbox 360

For those who don’t know much about either title, the Microsoft games descriptions can be found below:

Tomb Raider Underworld: “Dive, climb, fight, and jump your way back into the world of Lara Croft as she travels around the world to uncover the mystery surrounding Thor’s Hammer.

“You’ll need all of your new combat options and gear to help prevent a forgotten power being unleashed that could destroy civilization.”

Army of Two: “Combat, camaraderie, and cash. Bring your best buddy (or play with the AI) in this innovative co-op third-person shooter centered around the world of private military enterprise.

“Earn and spend your money to improve your weapons and increase your lethality as your jobs will take you around the world, from Afghanistan to South Korea, where your team will confront a conspiracy that threatens the entire world.”

As mentioned above, the final Xbox One Backwards Compatibility games have been released by Microsoft in 2017.

More are still coming next year, however, the tech giant have confirmed that there will be no new titles arriving in the coming days.

Xbox’s Major Nelson himself has confirmed that no more announcements were being planned for December, although more will arrive in 2018.

The team in charge of putting together these projects are off on their holidays, although fans can still add new Xbox 360 titles to their libraries through this month’s Games with Gold.

The final titles to be announced by Microsoft were Earth Defense Force 2017 and Sonic Adventure 2.

“After releasing 136 Xbox 360, 13 Original Xbox & 7 enhanced Xbox 360 titles in 2017, the Xbox One Backward Compatibility team is taking some time off for the holidays,” Xbox’s Larry Hryb confirms.

“Releases resume after New Year. Thank you for all of your support this year.”
