Netflix codes: Secret codes will release thousands of hidden films and TV series this Xmas

Netflix saved three of its most hotly-anticipated releases for the final few days of the year.

This month sees the launch of the fourth season of Black Mirror, season two of royal crowd-pleaser The Crown, and Will Smith blockbuster Bright.

has also added a slew of family classics ready for the holidays, including Love Actually, Back to the Future, Bridesmaids, and Monster House.

The new additions are just the latest in a swathe of exclusives to join the back catalogue over the last 12 months.

Netflix has launched a range of successful series this year, including , Orange Is The New Black, and 13 Reasons Why.

The company has also embraced its increasingly global footprint, cultivating those audiences with movies such as Okja, a film co-written by Bong Joon-ho, one of South Korea’s most prominent directors, and Welsh journalist Jon Ronson.

The critically-acclaimed film follows a young girl’s journey to recover a giant pig from a multi-national corporation.

With so many users likely to launch the video streaming service over the Christmas holidays, now seems like a pretty good time to reveal a series of hidden codes that can help to make choosing your next television binge much easier.

The numerical codes – which need to be pasted into the URL address bar in your web browser – unlock a number of hyper-specific genre categories previously only available to developers.

If you’re wondering just how “hyper-specific” Netflix genres can be, it’s probably worth pointing out that the US company has 36 separate genres for Blu-ray and 65 for Mistaken Identity.

In total, there are more than 15,000 individual genres to sort its movies and television shows.

These categories are used by the video on-demand service to work out recommendations for you, based on viewing history.

Thankfully, if you are watching online you can navigate to these sub-genres by modifying the URL in your web browser.

The simply swap out the ### with a numbered code. For example, 5286 is the code for Sports Comedies, 10757 shows all the British Movies and 9833 shows only Reality TV.

And navigating to netflix.com/browse/genre/10118 will show you only the Comic Book and Superhero Movies available on Netflix in your region.
