Real Madrid’s huge Alvaro Morata mistake laid bare by Sky Sports expert

That is the opinion of Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Graham Hunter.

Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid last summer for a fee that could rise to £70million.

The Spaniard has started his Blues career well, scoring nine in his first 16 Premier League appearances.

Real Madrid on the other hand have struggled in front of goal, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring just four in La Liga and Karim Benzema a measly two.

Hunter confirms Real Madrid want Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi in January but cannot understand why they sold Morata, especially with the well-documented injury problems for Gareth Bale.

“All the discussion is about Icardi, the striker is playing at Inter right now,” Hunter told fellow expert Guillem Balague.

“I have my doubts about whether he’s a natural fit.

“Clearly what’s happened is something that you and I talked about at the beginning of the season.

“In total, not only do you ship out the No 1 striker in the Spanish national team, but he hits the ground running at Chelsea

“There were 31 goals shipped out between James (Rodriguez) and Morata and at a time where Bale has been injured, Ronaldo hasn’t hit form and Benzema hasn’t really been able to find the net at all, that dip has been magnified.

“There is fear that if the form that has characterised Madrid up until now were to spill over into the next part of the season, the important trophies would go away.

“I’m not convinced there is a natural way to solve this in January, although Real Madrid are definitely looking for one.”
