Washington train crash horror: ‘Mass casualties’ as Amtrak train derails off bridge

Authorities have reported there have been fatalities and people are trapped onboard the Amtrak train.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show the train, which departed from Tacoma, hanging from a bridge over Interstate 5 (I-5), near Dupont.

Emergency services said they are responding to a “mass casualty incident”.

A passenger who was onboard the train when it derailed said at least seven cars have left the track.

Terrified passengers were forced to kick out windows to get out when the train’s emergency doors failed to open.

The I-5 is closed in both directions and authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area.

The crash occurred at around 7.50am local time this morning.

A statement from Amtrak said: “Amtrak is aware of an incident with Train 501, Cascades service from Seattle to Portland. Emergency services are on the scene and Amtrak management is responding.”
