Metro – 7/10: “Perhaps the settings just have a different default now, but we also found the sensitivity of the controls to be more satisfying than before. Even if the controls still feel a little weightless. Given these improvements the big question for us now is whether the game is better than indie rival A Hat In Time. In technical terms Yooka-Laylee definitely has the advantage, and the improved camera is now one of the game’s key advantages.

“But A Hat In Time is more inventive and unpredictable. Yooka-Laylee is still a backwards-looking game that is more concerned with recreating the past than forging the future.

“That’s not the criticism it may sound like, but it does mean the game has to limit itself to being the ultimate nostalgia trip rather than the ultimate 3D platformer.”

Nintendo Life – 8/10: “All told, Yooka-Laylee is a worthy modern tribute to the collectathons of yore, and it is highly recommended for Switch owners. This feels like a game that belongs in 1996, but with all the quality improvements of a game made in 2017, making for an excellent blend of new and old. Though it can be a little uneven at times, the game as a whole manages to successfully achieve its goals.

“Do yourself a favour and give this one a go; it may not have been too well received to begin with, but Playtonic has polished it up quite nicely; it is a worthy addition to the Switch library.”

Eurogamer – No Score: “The bottom line is that if you were on the fence with this game, or worried that it may not run well on Switch, you can rest easy – Playtonic’s port is well worth your time.

“It’s also a perfect way to finish off an incredible year on Switch for platform game fans. Between Super Mario Odyssey, Sonic Mania, Blaster Master Zero, Mighty Gunvolt Burst and Shovel Knight, the Switch has delivered a sensational line-up. Yooka-Laylee’s Switch conversion is the icing on the cake.”

GameSpace – 8.5/10: “And if that wasn’t all, Co-Op mode is stellar, and there are tons of multiplayer mini-games you can access in the main game, or from the start menu. Tracking down and collecting Pagies can be a bit repetitive, but welcome to the world of platforming adventures. Or really most any game, we’d wager. Yooka-Laylee is a prime example of what it meant to love N64 games, brought to life today and still feels relevant.

“That’s a heck of an achievement, and I’m anxious to see what Playtonic can do next. While it doesn’t quite stand as tall as the Mario Odyssey masterpiece, Yooka-Laylee is a game every Switch owner should consider. Fantastic fun for all ages, and tons of content to boot.”
