After a two year wait, the follow-up to Star Wars The Force Awakens has finally been released.
So how long will fans have to wait for Star Wars Episode IX, the last film in the sequel trilogy and conclusion to the whole Skywalker saga?
Originally Star Wars 9 was set for release in summer 2019 and would be written and directed by Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow.
However, Lucasfilm fired him over creative differences and brought back The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams to finish the job.
Due to the changes, Abrams has been given more time to work on the script and to prepare for production in 2018.
So Star Wars Episode IX will be released in the UK on December 20, 2019, the same two year gap between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
The film’s subtitle is currently unknown and is unlikely to be revealed until early 2019, just as The Last Jedi’s wasn’t until early this year.
Nevertheless fans have another Star Wars movie to look forward to in just five months time. Following Rogue One as a Star Wars spin-off is Solo: A Star Wars Story, which will be released on May 25, 2018.

The film, which saw its original directors fired and replaced too, follows the adventures of Han Solo and Chewie before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
Other Star Wars movies in development include an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie starring Ewan McGregor, a Boba Fett solo movie and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s new Star Wars trilogy.
Star Wars Episode IX will be released in UK cinemas on December 20, 2019.
