Russia demands US’ information on North Korea as Putin refuses to ‘strangle’ regime

The Kremlin said it would share its own information on the hermit state with the US in return.

Putin and Donald Trump agreed the exchange in a phone call this morning, despite Russia refusing to turn the screw on North Korea with economic sanctions.

The pair also spoke about establishing their own network of contacts within North Korea, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The two men had also talked about improving dialogue between Russia and the United States, Peskov said.

Russia earlier refused to be part of a United Nations policy to hit North Korea economically, claiming it was reaching a “red line” which would cause “economic strangulation”.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Igor Morgulov told Interfax news agency: “Russia will not be part of this.

“We consider this counterproductive, since economic pressure alone will not lead to the outcome we seek, the resolution of the nuclear problem in the Korean Peninsula. “Also, there is a humanitarian dimension, since sanctions hurt ordinary people in the first place, which we have to take into account.”

Russia wants the US and South Korea to stop antagonising Kim Jong-un by carrying out joint military exercises.

Mr Morgulov revealed Russia is in regular contact with North Korea.

He added: “Our interstate relations with DPRK are regular. We are neighbours and have a wide spectrum of channels for dialogue, through our foreign ministries, on cabinet level, through the legislature… We have a big interstate commission for cooperation which deals with economic projects.”
