Do NOT punish Britain! Luxembourg tells EU Brexit talks with UK should be ‘based on trust’

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said negotiations between the UK and the Brussels club should be “based on trust”.

He called for the EU to negotiate with Prime Minister Theresa May after the EU Parliament rubber-stamped its approval on the first phase of the Brexit deal on Wednesday.

Speaking before the pre-EU summit meeting of the ALDE party, he said: “We should not punish the British citizens because they have decided to leave.

“But we should not punish the other countries too because one is leaving.”

Mr Bettell was also dismissive of Mrs May’s House of Commons defeat last night, saying: “I believe that May will negotiate something, we will negotiate something, we will agree on something and then again Theresa May will come back to Westminster.”
