and its despot leader have been embroiled in a bitter war of words with US President Donald Trump, even threatening to target a US air base in Guam with an an ICBM strike.

responding, promising to retaliate with “fire and fury” even suggesting he is happy to “totally destroy” North Korea if breaks out.

Amid the tension, a former US ambassador to the UN has warned Mr Trump that it is perhaps his rhetoric which threatens to turn tension into war.

Bill Richardson told RT: “He’s constantly undermining his Defence Secretary of State who I believe wants a diplomatic solution.

“I think the President tweets, his personal insults of the North Korean leader are very unhelpful at a time when I think both sides are at an increased state of tension.

“The region is in a terrible state of tension and the policy of the administration pushing China to go in the right direction with North Korea is correct.

“But, the policy is constantly undermined by the President’s tweets in the morning.”

Mr Richardson said if the US agreed to hold fewer military drills in the region then Kim Jong-un could be convinced to halt his ICBM programme.

He added: “That’s going to be a long-term solution but what is needed is an immediate easing of tensions in a region that might blow up.”

New video footage has emerged from North Korea showing Kim Jong-un appearing with a team of nuclear scientists before Communist Party leaders.

The appearance before the huge crowd of government officials comes after North Korea boasted of its most recent missile success.

The missile travelled higher than any tested previously by North Korea, prompting US President Donald Trump to bolster his military presence on Kim Jong-un’s doorstep.

The fresh exercises will be the sixth drills sharing information in tracking ballistic missiles among the three allies on Kim Jong-un’s doorstep, according to Japanese officials.

It was not established whether the US’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system would be involved in the preparations for further North Korea missile launches.

The THAAD system sparked outrage from China, after the high-tech defence system was installed in South Korea. Beijing fears the system’s powerful radar could look deep into China and threaten its own security.
