Geminids in India: Where can you watch the Geminid Meteor Shower in India?

Stargazers across India will focus their attention on meteors as the debris from Asteroid 3200 Phaethon burns up in the atmosphere.

The Geminids appear in the night skies every December but reach their peak this year between this evening (Wednesday December 13) and dawn tomorrow (Thursday December 14).

Anywhere between 60 to 100 will burst out and streak across the sky overnight.

Where to watch the Geminids meteors shower in India?

The great news about the Geminids is that their broad spectrum makes them visible anywhere on the globe.

The shower is expected to fully start around 10pm IST, before reaching a critical point at 2am IST on Thursday.

For the best results, stargazers have been told to seek out places where the dark skies are clear and light pollution is low.

There is, however, some concern that dense fog and low visibility could hinder the spectacle.

’s National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC) warned of dense fog in isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh.

Modest patches of fog could also affect areas in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.

The NWFC has warned that there was visibility at Bareilly, Ludhiana, Ambala, Karnal, Aligarh, Agra and Gwailor around 5.30pm IST.

An “upper air cyclonic circulation” has also been spotted between 1.5km and 3.1km over North Punjab.

How to see the Geminids in India tonight?

Debiprosad Duari, director of the MP Birla Planetarium, told GQ India said that the meteors will break out at considerable speeds but will be visible to the naked eyes.

He said: “Since meteors are slow moving, the bright streaks of light will be easily visible.”

Because the shower is visible to the naked eye, there is no need to pull out your telescopes or binoculars.

Once you spot a meteor or two, you can trace their path back to the Gemini constellation.

But this is largely irrelevant because the meteors will spread out in all directions. Simply take in the whole sky to enjoy the spectacle.

Find a comfortable and warm spot and prepare some snacks and drinks to keep you cosy through the night.

If you would rather stay indoors, you can watch the entire meteor shower from the comfort of home. Click here to watch the .
