Star Wars Last Jedi: Gwendoline Christie reveals what exactly is ‘SURPRISING’ in Episode 8

Stars such as Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill have said frequently that they were taken aback by the direction writer-director Rian Johnson will be taking us in – so what’s exactly in store?

While Christie, who plays Captain Phasma, did not spill specific plot details, she did reveal that Johnson has scratched beneath the surface of our favourite characters more than any of his predecessors.

“It’s an incredibly moving film, actually,” she said on Live With Kelly and Ryan.

“It’s spectacular and got the dynamic that you expect from a Star Wars film but there’s something about it… it’s not just because it’s our amazing Carrie Fisher’s last performance, which by the way is so beautiful.

“But it has a surprising intimacy about it.”

She added: “When you watch Star Wars movies, the characters are so captivating that you want to go further with them; you want to see more of them, more of their relationships.

“And there’s so much depth in this – everyone is flawed, and that’s what’s so exciting about it. Everyone is very human.”

The British star, who also features in Game of Thrones, spoke highly of Fisher’s final performance, which was completed shortly before her unexpected death last December.

“Rian Johnson has done an incredible job of honouring [her],” she said.

“It lives as a performance on its own. And what’s beautiful is we get to see her again. It’s so, so beautiful.”

Not only will we see Fisher, but it seems we’ll also get a cameo from her dog Gary.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on December 14 in the UK.
