Snapdragon 845 will bring HOURS of extra battery life to OnePlus, Samsung and LG phones

Qualcomm has unveiled its new chipset, the Snapdragon 845, during its second annual technology summit.

The flagship system on a chip, SoC, will likely power the next generation of flagship Android smartphones, including upcoming handsets from the likes of LG, OnePlus and HTC.

Samsung purportedly to use the next-generation silicon.

The all-new premium mobile CPU retains the same 10nm footprint as its predecessor, but boasts a revamped architecture.

These tweaks have enabled some exciting new features – like 4K HDR video capture on smartphones and improved Artificial Intelligence (AI) processing.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 will also offer improved power consumption, which should result in markedly better battery life for your new smartphone.

Overall, the Snapdragon 845 consumes 30 per cent less power than the 835.

Speaking of battery life, the embedded Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology inside the new SnapDragon is designed to boost your device up to 50 per cent of a full charge in just 15 minutes.

The new chipset will also boast faster performance than its predecessor.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 845 will be around 25 to 30 per cent faster than the SnapDragon 835, which launched in November 2016.

Like the SnapDragon 835, the new SnapDragon 845 consists of four performance cores, designed to handle more taxing tasks, as well as four efficiency cores, designed to maximise battery life and handle lighter tasks.

The first devices to be powered by the Qualcomm SnapDragon 845 won’t land until early 2018, the company has confirmed.

That means it’ll be a little while before we can really judge the power efficiency and speed of the new chipset.

Qualcomm is also touting the photography prowess of the SnapDragon 845.

According to the company, the new camera architecture inside the chip enriches image colour quality, enhances depth sensing, and accelerates performance of camera apps.

It says, “we’re further improving colour technology as we’re capturing 64 times more shades of colour information than our previous generation flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 835.

“In fact, the Snapdragon 845 is the first mobile platform to enable this leap in color capture, creating high-dynamic range (HDR) video for an amazing playback experience on Ultra HD Premium.”

SnapDragon 845 also benefits from the latest integrated X20 modem, which opens up the possibility of mobile data speeds up to 1.2 gigabits per second, or 20 per cent faster than the previous generation modem.
